SchoolTube Teacher of the Week
For the week of July 7, 2008
Chris Landinguin: San Gabriel Mission High School
SchoolTube: How long have you be teaching?
Chris Landinguin: I've been teaching for 17 years, ranging from grades K-12.
ST: How long have you been teaching video?
CL: I just completed my first year teaching television production/video production.
ST: What subjects do you teach/have you taught?
CL: I have taught almost
everything except for English. I have focused on teaching Science and
Social Studies for the past 16years. This year I am teaching television
production, yearbook, Government, and two Fine Arts classes.
ST: Did you always want to be a video teacher?
CL: I Think I always wanted to
be a filmmaker, my friends and I would get together in high school and
make movies and have our own film festivals. Teaching is just another
way of living that life :)
ST: What is your favorite part about teaching video?
CL: It makes me happy and
rewarded seeing students being able to grasp the science of editing as
well as the science and art of cinematography. I also enjoy looking at
their video creations and weekly news shows.
ST: How did the video program at your school start? How old is it?
CL: Our television station is about 3 years old, but MTVMission Television as a weekly news show is new this year.
ST: Why do you consider video a class worth offering at the K-12 level?
CL: You use all of the subjects
to create videos. It is a great integration tool. This week alone we
worked with the Spanish class as well as the Literary Arts Magazine to
create videos.
ST: Do you have any advice for other video teachers?
CL: Stay creative, stay fresh,
stay fun! I'd also say you have to love what you are doing or the
students will know really fast; especially if it is all caught on video
:)
ST: Do you have any memorable stories from your teaching experience?
CL: My most memorable
experience was being able to train with other teachers in the "Teacher
in Space" program. It was fantastic to be with 30 other like minded
people, filled with energy and wanting to better the sciences as well as
schools in general. We were allowed almost total access to some secret
sites that most normal people do not get to experience, like Norad,
Cheyenne Mountain, and the Air Force Academy.
ST: Do you have any other comments or stories you'd like to add?
CL: Our first year at MTV
Mission Television was great! We made some people laugh, cry, and
certainly kept student's attention with our 10min shows. A special
thanks to Mr.Collins my principal for having faith and Trixie and
Denise for all of their help editing this year. :)
