RTNDF's High School Broadcast Journalism Project

About HSBJ

The High School Broadcast Journalism Project (HSBJ) is a non-profit organization dedicated to building and maintaining outstanding high school broadcast journalism programs, including television, radio and multimedia online. A project of the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation funded by the James S. and John L. Knight Foundation, HSBJ helps schools, teachers and students receive the support, training and resources they need to support broadcast journalism in their schools.

In addition to learning basic journalism and cutting-edge technology skills, students who cover the news gain first-hand experience with their First Amendment rights and responsibilities, helping them better understand the role of the media in a democratic society.

HSBJ resources and programs

HSBJ serves high school communities in many different ways, ranging from helping establish new programs to providing ongoing training and support to students and teachers. We work to establish partnerships between schools and professional broadcast organizations, advocate on behalf of teachers and offer extensive resources to teachers and students.

For teachers

HSBJ PhotoHSBJ offers training courses, start-up toolkits, lesson plans and other support materials to high school teachers through our website. The site also features online forums where teachers can connect with peers, share ideas and query best practices. In addition, we sponsor workshops dedicated to production skills, classroom management and journalism excellence throughout the year.

For students

We offer a variety of programs including contests in broadcast journalism and First Amendment issues, information on student workshops and scholarships and online forums where teens can connect with other young journalists. We also offer workshop sessions led by professional broadcasts on topics such as writing, reporting, videography, podcasting and journalism ethics.
