About SkillsUSA
SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations. It is a partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives, working together to ensure America has a skilled work force. Participation in SkillsUSA increases productivity by cultivating a highly skilled and knowledgeable workforce to meet 21st century needs.
SkillsUSA helps students to develop their knowledge and technical skills and also an attitude of sincere enthusiasm and passion for their education, their career their relationships. Student participants are motivated to be the best they can be in their technical skill and personal/professional development. The students are given an opportunity into practice teamwork skills, creativity and project management.
Organization
SkillsUSA is organized by state and within each state, by region. At the local level it is designed to be run by students, for their own growth and benefit. Through chapter meetings, contests, leadership conferences and activities, students will be building these skills. Each chapter chooses, plans and conducts its own activities.
The competitions conducted by SkillsUSA are designed and managed by the Technical Committees, made up largely of active industry professionals. This insures that the competitions reflect and represent the real world activities that take place in each occupational field. Each technical Committee is also active in securing sponsorship for their competition, often from companies active in their industry segment.
National Conference Information
The National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) is a showcase of career and technical education students. More than 5,000 outstanding career and technical education students (all state contest winners) compete hands-on in different trade, technical and leadership fields. The competitions are run with the help of industry, trade associations, and labor organizations, with test competencies set by industry.
